  • Back the truck up to the body and raise the roll-off frame
  • Connect the body and pull it up on to the hoist. Hoists include both inside cab controls and outside controls
  • To dump or unload raise the top of the frame

Bodies include

Operating Instructions

These instructions serve as a supplement to those shown in the front of the American Rolloff® parts manual.

1) POSITION THE ROLL-OFF so it is in line with the container , back within 6 feet of the container. Set the brakes.

2) RAISING THE HOIST TO PICK UP THE CONTAINER

  • CHECK OVER HEAD FOR OBSTRUCTIONS SUCH AS ELECTRICAL WIRES
  • With the transmission in neutral and the clutch depressed, shift the Power Take Off control on the truck’s dash into gear. After switching the PTO Shifter, release the clutch and the PTO will be engaged. Hot shift PTO for automatic transmissions may require just switching the PTO on.
  • Examine your hoist controls, they should look like those shown below. Controls are located both inside the cab and outside the drivers door. At first use the controls outside the cab.

INSIDE CAB

  • Before raising the hoist, loosen the cable so it can be removed from the hook in the rear. Place the winch lever in the down position. Watch the cable to confirm you are loosening the cable. Inadvertently tightening the cable could rip the hook off the back of the hoist. Remove the cable from the holding hook and place it on the fender to keep it from dragging, when backing up.
  • Raise the hoist to within 1 to 2 inches of the ground. Again watch out for over head wires and be careful not to crush the cable. If you watch the rear of the truck the fenders will raise up when the hoist touches the ground, then lower the hoist a few inches so the hoist roller is 1" to 2" above the ground.

3) POSITIONING THE HOIST

  • Reenter the cab, release the brake, and continue to back up the rolloff truck towards the container. The hoist rear roller should be no more than one inch off the ground and the cable should be out of the way.
  • The container and truck must "mate" as follows:

The outside rails of the container must straddle the outside rails of the hoist. The end of the hoist rails must be under the container's front rollers. The truck and container must be aligned. If the truck does not line up perfectly, pull up and try again, after some practice lining up is easy.

4) RAISING THE CONTAINER

Before raising the container confirm that there are no obstructions over head and that the container has nothing attached to it or behind it. When hauling compaction containers make sure the CONTAINER IS DISCONNECTED FROM THE COMPACTOR.

  • Place the cable and hook on the containers hook.

  • Slowly push the winch up lever to take up slack in the cable. Make sure that the cable is not caught on anything or wrapped around any parts of the frame.

  • Pull the container 4" to 6" onto the hoist and check that it is properly "mated" to the hoist. If so, continue to pull the container up. If the truck is properly aligned with the container it will continue up the hoist.

  • If the container is not perfectly aligned the truck can be steered under the container. If the parking brakes are released, the truck can be steered by turning the front wheel. Again, as you pull up the container watch for over head obstructions.

5) After the container passes the hinge point and the back fender you can begin to lower the container hoist down lever. Slowly lower the hoist as the container is pulled up trying to allow the truck to back under the container.

DO NOT WORK UNDER OR PLACE YOUR HANDS OR BODY UNDER THE HOIST WHEN IT IS IN THE UP POSITION.

6) Keep the hoist up 8 - 10 inches until you pull the container into the front hooks. Lower the hoist all the way down to engage the front safety latch. This latch is designed to secure outside rail containers during transit. Do not over tighten the cable.

7) Return to the cab and disconnect the PTO. The truck SHOULD NOT be driven (except for positioning) with the PTO in gear, if during container transport a lever is inadvertently pushed, the container could be released or the hoist raised.

8) TO DUMP THE CONTAINER LOAD

  • Make sure you are on a stable, hard and flat surface. Walk to the back of the container and open the door. (Caution: the contents may be under pressure so stand clear of the door when opening it.) Secure the door on the side of the container with the chain provided. Engage the PTO, and check for over head obstructions.

  • Push the hoist up lever to raise the hoist, pull forward as the load comes out of the container. Lower the hoist, disengage the PTO and close the container door.

9) REPLACING THE CONTAINER

  • Return to the compactor and align the container, compactor and truck. Engage the PTO, check for over head obstructions and raise the hoist. The hoist must be raised 10 to 12 feet before letting the container off using the winch down lever. Move the truck up or back so that the container is positioned at the compactor. Be careful not to hit the truck's fenders with the roll-off container's front rollers. Also, remember, the hoist must touch the ground before sliding the container all the way off.

10) Remove the cable hook from the container. Put the roll-off truck up a few feet and drop the hoist into the down position. Return the cable hook to its hook on the back of the frame. WARNING: do not drag the cable on the ground or it will wear.

The cable should be replaced it is fraying or cut. When changing the cable make sure that all the cable pulleys turn.
